Villa Barluzzi
In the past the historic house Villa Barluzzi was the ancient church of Sant’ Andrea del Pendolo, dating back from the 12th century. From 1145 to 1812 it was the beating heart of the life of the local parish community until on 28 July 1926 it was bought by members of the well-known family of English photographers Anderson from Rome and renovated by the papal engineer and architect Giulio Barluzzi. Since then the prestigious Villa has inextricably linked its name to the married couple Maria Anderson (1883 – 1935) and Giulio Barluzzi (1879 – 1953) and it became the destination of numerous illustrious guests and personalities of European culture who chose Ravello in the 1900s as a place of inspiration and vacation.
It was restored by the new owner with works completed in 2023 which however have preserved its architectural value, leaving the layout and outdoor spaces unchanged. The Villa enjoys an extraordinary view of the Amalfi Coast.
Villa Barluzzi is located only 250 metres far from the historic center of Ravello and from Piazza Duomo, overlooked by the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and San Pantaleone, 350 meters from Villa Rufolo, home of the famous music festival organized by the Ravello Foundation, and 5 minutes from Villa Cimbrone, an ancient 12th century residence. The building is also a short distance from the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie documented since 1163 and from the church of Santissima Annunziata dating back to 1277.
It is about 365 meters above sea level along the Amalfi Coast between Minori and Amalfi whose beaches can be reached in a few minutes.
It is spread over three levels with six rooms, all personalized with precious period furnishings which, together with the attention to detail and the most modern services, make it a jewel that offers its customers an unforgettable stay.
The recent restoration works have been made precious by the contribution of the Vietri artist Franco Raimondi, author of the mosaics present in the Villa, of the representation of the Ravello Madonna and of that of Sant’ Andrea. Raimondi with his creations is a point of reference for ceramic lovers at an international level, the unmistakable style of the Master is now a distinctive sign of the innovation of Vietri decorative culture.
The painter Vito Mercurio, on the other hand, is the author of the frescoes and ceramic floors from Vietri, commissioned exclusively for Villa Barluzzi. The artist’s creative flair has reworked myths and historical events in an exciting combination of classicism and love for the territory that enchants the visitor.
In the large vault overlooking the sea, the Virtues have been represented, as in the Church of the Beatitudes erected in 1937 by the architect of the Holy Land Antonio Barluzzi in Tabga , Israel. A symbolic embrace between the Barluzzi brothers , two great protagonists of the history of 20th century Italian architecture.
Finally, the bells of Villa Barluzzi were designed on commission and made by the Pontifical Marinelli Bell Foundry which has been operating for over ten centuries in Agnone, in Molise. It is the oldest Italian foundry, among the oldest ones in the world, which in 1924 obtained from Pope Pius XI the privilege of effigy of the pontifical coat of arms, and was nominated for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for traditional bell-making art by the Ministry of Culture in 2023.
Villa Barluzzi has therefore rediscovered its splendor thanks to the design, enhancement and modernization studies of the structure by engineers Bonaventura Fraulo and Giuseppe Mormile who with professionalism and passion have preserved the historical value of the Villa, making the rooms functional to modern needs and making use of the work of local workers expertly guided by Arturo Guadagno, Antonio Aronne and Antonio Amato.
The light show that enhances the monumentality of Villa Barluzzi in the nocturnal skyline of Ravello is instead an architectural installation designed and built by the engineer Giuseppe Mormile who with his company has been creating a new emotional perception of spaces and environments with light for three generations.
The meticulous historical reconstruction of the structure through archival sources and studies was instead handled by Dr. Salvatore Amato of the State Archive of Salerno, so that the historical memory of the Villa is entrusted to those who want to relive it in all its charm.
We are waiting for you to discover history, traditions, culture and landscape in an exclusive stay suspended between sky and sea at Villa Barluzzi.
Maria Anderson and Giulio Barluzzi wanted to welcome travelers and passers-by as follows:
“Since we were Andrew’s temple, built on ancient ruins, isn’t it true that the sea and the sky shine brighter? Julius and his wife Maria dared to do this so that the stars, the buildings, the sea sing for the eternal God” MC – MCMXXXII
and with these words we welcome you to Villa Barluzzi.
