Francesco Raimondi
Francesco Raimondi was born in 1959 in Vietri sul Mare, in the province of Salerno. Since he was a child he has cultivated his passion for drawing and has been fascinated by the creative work of Vietri ceramic workshops such as that of “Bambiniello”, where he took his first steps. As a boy he was a pupil of Giovannino Carrano whose talent and humble origins he admired. The artistic influence of Vietri, gateway to the Amalfi Coast, and its Greco-Roman roots are strong. From his apprenticeship in the Vietri “faenzere” he became a master majolica maker, working in the “L’Archetto” laboratory in Vietri and boasting collaborations with the greatest international ceramists such as Licata, Galliani, Chin, Moncada, Kodra, Kerassioti, Ben Slimane, Willburger , Barisani, Eokauren and last but not least Manuel Cargaleiro. He managed to innovate the classical iconography of Vietri with a personal reinterpretation through creations of a traditional, geometric abstract and portrait nature and then express himself with an original and unique language through grotesque decoration.
In 2006 he won the Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in London with the Campania region, awarded by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. In October 2016 he was awarded the title of “Master of Art and Craft”, as one of the main exponents of Italian quality in the world. The jury of the Milan triennial, the Cologni association and the ALMA association have included Master Raimondi in the Golden Book of Italian Artisan Excellence. In 2018 he was awarded the Honor of Knight of Merit of the Italian Republic by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella and on 2 June 2024 he collected the recognition as Officer of Merit of the Italian Republic given to him by the Prefect of Salerno at the Giuseppe Verdi Theatre.
Raimondi’s art
From “Raimondesche” the exuberance of Emanuele Gaudenzi’s fantasy
…Francesco Raimondi has managed to transfigure the historical legacy of the territory into a personal and unmistakable lexicon, disruptive and unprecedented: a language capable of combining the poetry of folklore with the suggestions of primitivism, combining classic and avant-garde style, ancient and modern, tradition and current events.
The festive range of its entire production, versatile and composite, bears witness to this. The registers are different and the methods of execution are always new, from the perceptive revival of the popular iconography of the majolica models (flasks, basins, lunettes, tiles), to the ingenious elaboration of sculptures and plastic groups in vitreous crust (naiads, heroines, ichthyocentaurs, iguanas, fish). And then again from the great paintings with sacred or worldly, mythological or historicist subjects to that reckless “conceptual” trend, marked by a geometric, gestural and swirling, scenographic and spectacular abstractionism, between Moorish references and technological additions, characterized by lively enamels and iridescent crystallines (sculptures, stems, panels, vases, masks).
…Even if each work is dedicated to a character or a completed story, to a closed and separate topic, it seems clear that each of them is nothing more than a single passage of a single narrative. No detail, not even the slightest veil is repeated identically elsewhere, yet one has the impression that everything returns, in an uninterrupted flow that proceeds without interruption, in a game that is always the same and always varied. We have therefore ended up in the middle of some ancient history, but it is also true that among many classical references we also find ourselves among completely contemporary mythological creatures: cars, planes, televisions, telephones, and even toilets… inside this tale of shiny and velvety majolica, suddenly we find ourselves face to face with the artist himself, Francesco Raimondi from Vietri sul Mare, master majolica maker and refined painter, vigorous sculptor and skilled ornamentalist, but also the dreaming Satyr, Nepthur and many other things…
